Smokey Brooks
Spin-It Jig
Gotta be thankful for the old-school policy of recording up-tempo funk tracks on b-sides of ballads for a double shot at success. For all his best efforts, Smokey Brooks' "Eternal" certainly isn't the reason why this 45 is widely sought. "Spin-It Jig" is a damn fine tune that uses the patent JBs trick of building an entire groove around the anticipation of a great bridge section and it's a hell of a groove. (Nerd note: most famous for being sampled by Portishead for the song "Sour Times".)
