Ronnie, Norman & Earl
Shugalu

This 1970 recording out of Philadelphia was released on Clyde Otis' obscure Volare label. Otis (1924 - 2008) was one of the first black A&R guys for a major label joining Mercury in 1958. His signings included Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington and Brook Benton.

Ronnie Baker, Norman Harris and Earl Young achieved success a couple of years later as members of the instrumental group MFSB with 'TSOP' - better known as the theme from Soul Train - being their biggest hit. The orchestration and arrangement of 'Shugalu' definitely points in that direction.
